Fighting the South Dakota Abortion Ban the best way we know how - WITH BEER! Come on out!
Local girls use beer to fight abortion ban:
`Are we really still fighting for this?' they ask
May 4, 2006 – Brooklyn, NY. Five girls from Queens are doing their
best to help the women of South Dakota, who are 1,600 miles and less
than two months away from the most draconian abortion ban since
1973. Their method? Beer, music, and, well, beer.
On Thursday, May 11, at 8pm, the girls will be hosting "Can you
believe we're still fighting for this?" – a fundraiser for the
Planned Parenthood of South Dakota's legal fund.
"We're going into this with a million dollar donation against us
from the start," said Kiera Downes-Vogel, one of the event's
organizers. "It's not going to be easy, but what else are we going
to do? There's no way I want to live in a country where my daughters
might have to drive into Canada just to get birth control."
Frustrated by the news of the impending abortion ban in South
Dakota, the girls knew they wanted to do something but weren't sure
where to start. After throwing around a few ideas, they decided to
ask friends for help. And the result was like an avalanche.
"People just started coming out of the woodwork," said Downes-
Vogel, "I just mentioned to a friend that we were looking for a
venue, and all of the sudden we had café on board and free beer from
Brooklyn Breweries."
The event, which is being held at Café Grumpy in Greenpoint, will
feature DJs, singers, a belly dancer, and donated beer from Brooklyn
Breweries. The girls will be charging $10 at the door, all of which
will go to Planned Parenthood.
The girls, none of whom have ever held a fundraiser, have been
astounded by the outpouring of support they've found from the
community. Hoping to raise not just funds but the energy of the pro-
choice movement, they have been chronicling their progress on a blog
(mychoiceusa.blogspot.com) where they also encourage supporters to
take action by sending wire hangers to the Governor of South Dakota
and volunteering with Planned Parenthood. Still, the girls know
there is a lot of work ahead of them.
"It's easy to feel helpless when you're half-way across the
country," said Dana Gallagher, one of the event's organizers, "this
is our way of saying `you're not alone – we're all in this fight
together'."
